Synopsis

Auf dem Weg zum Pub begegnet der Tagelöhner und Trinker John Durbeyfield dem Dorfpfarrer Parson Tringham. Der Geistliche erzählt, dass er Ahnenforschnung betrieben habe und dabei herausfand, dass Johns Familie mit den d’Urbervilles verwandt ist, einem sagenhaft reichen, allerdings mittlerweile ausgestorbenen Clan.

Zur gleichen Zeit vergnügt sich Johns Tochter, die wunderschöne Tess, mit anderen Mädchen aus dem Dorf auf der Maiparade. Vom Tanzflächenrand aus beobachtet sie einen gutaussehenden jungen Mann, allerdings scheint er sie keines Blickes zu würdigen. Tess erfährt von ihren Begleiterinnen, dass es sich um Angel Clare handelt, einen Pfarrerssohn aus dem Nachbardorf.
